The iconic Hotel Kazakhstan that looms over Almaty city was built in 1978, and was designed to withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake. When completed in the 70s, the building was testament to the development and advancement of Soviet engineering.

Since then, newer and swankier hotels have sprouted up in the busy city, but the Soviet-era Hotel Kazakhstan still retains its old-world charm. Its rooftop bar offers panoramic views of the city and the mountains. Rates start from $65 a night.
